The California Physician Parity Index

Every California county, graded on one question: does its physician workforce reflect the patients it serves? Where Latinos are most of the patients and a fraction of the doctors, care suffers and lives are lost. We measure that gap, county by county, and we name it.

Method: the concordance deficit is the share of patients who are Latino minus the share of physicians who are Latino, by county. Patient data is Medi-Cal enrollment; physician data is the California physician workforce. A grade of A means the workforce nearly mirrors its patients; F means it is more than 55 points behind. This is a patient-safety measure, not an opinion. Figures are sourced and checkable; we publish only what the data shows.

Every county, ranked by deficit

Worst gap first. A larger deficit means the physician workforce is further from the patients it serves.

What the grade is for

A score that no institution can wish away is how change starts. The Index is published, ranked, and updated. We ask every California medical school and health system a single question, and we keep a public record of who answers, who refuses, and who stays silent. If you are a physician, a patient, or a leader in one of these counties, you belong on the record.
